For the older people in here, my friends and I used to record music off the radio and make "mix" tapes all the time. Was that illegal? Apparently not, but now you get sued for the same thing. Is it illegal because it's so easy now, or what?

"my friends and I used to record music off the radio and make "mix" tapes all the time. Was that illegal?' - Yes that was illegal. It always had been.

However in the days of cassette recorders capturing music off the air, it was harder to catch people doing it and normally it meant one low quality copy was made. Now in the digital world, people make exact copies off of CDs and put them on the internet for thousands or millions of people to down load. This is having a visible affect on CD sales. The record companies are pursuing people that share large amounts of music.

It is not the same thing at all. The record companies actuall get paid every time their song plays on the radio. So in that sense they are still making money from the play. However if I download a song from the internet for free, then share it, the record company makes no money. If the record companies make no money then they dont have the money to pay the musicians, then the musicians would be responsible for marketing their own music. The system has been working fine for many years, then along comes somebody to mess everything up.

its illegal bc the songs are copyrighted and the greedy artists aren't getting paid in full bc ppl would rather download a couple of their good songs instead of buying their crappy album with only one goot track...b4 i remember getting mixed tapes and stuff but a lot of the upcoming artists welcomed it bc they were getting heard elsewhere around the country not its not the same situation...people get famous out of making one hit and they want to make sure they get their royalities so if they feel that they aren't getting what they deserve they;ll try to get thier money anyway they can...

It's always been unlawful, but now it's happening on a larger scale so they are spending more effort enforcing it. Before, it was just a few people doing that kind of thing, so they didn't care.

in case you like some unfastened money, rig up your vehicle with cameras that flow to the internet, and play the song close to police. attempt to get them to attack you and ruin your cameras. do no longer tell them that the video is definitely streaming to the internet, and that destroying them is ineffective. you additionally could make adequate money to retire in like 30 minutes that way.
