Hi,
I would recommend staying on the strip if you are looking for a more trendy and sophisticated atmosphere. Fremont St. (the old strip) has vintage charm and the Golden Nugget has an amazing pool complete with a shark tank aquarium, but you will have to take a cab or the Deuce bus to get to the newer casinos.
As for deals, try Vegas.com or Southwestvacations.com. Also, the Monte Carlo is currently having a promotion for football season. Rooms start at $100 per night plus a free buffet for 2 and $10 free slots. There is construction next door but if you get a room facing the mountains vs. the strip it's quiet. I stayed there last week and thought it was a nice compromise between a ritzy place like Bellagio and a cheaper place like Circus Circus.
Have fun!

las vegas it is expensive... Vegas is a place where you need a hotel to just stay and relax and stretch legs. Most of time you will be out site seeing or partying late night. So it doesnt make sense to spend a lot of money on staying specially if you are on a budget. 1) If you are going with friends and you gusy are comfortable, just book one room with 2 queen beds and crash in it. I remember first time when I went there, we all were students and 5-6 people stayed in one room. No one says anything. you will be able to get unlimited room service for towers and stuff. You will be able to get extra blankets etc also. Just 2 people check in. It applies to almost all hotels. So this will really help you manage your budget and stay in better hotel. 2) If you dont want to stay with more than 2 peopel in a room or only few people are traveling then best bet is Excalibur. It is on the strip, so all places are at walking distance and it is very cheap and decent rooms to spend a night or more. I have stayed there most of my time. 2nd choice should be luxor. Luxor is a very good hotel and you will find its prices little expensive than Excalibur but i think it is worth it. Dont stay in any hotel which is not on strip for example palms or any other. the reason is that you will either have to walk so much to come to strip where all action is or you will have to take cab which will add to expenses. Tip - When you are just going out to roam around, wear comfortable shoes, it involves a lot of walking. better take a cab on way back it is cheap.

Here is a GREAT site:
http://www.travelaxe.com
It searches a bunch of sites and gives you the best deal. But I suggest that you use it only as a guide. Find good deals, then go to the hotel's site to see if you can get a better deal.
As for cheap hotels ON the strip: Circus Circus, Stratosphere, Sahara, Imperial Palace (great location- mid-strip), Tropicana (sometimes).
And finally, you can try looking in local Vegas and Los Angeles newspapers for good deals. Hotels advertise in papers when they have open rooms that they really want to book up.

I am leaving for Vegas in two weeks and I booked 2 rooms at the Excalibur and 4 round trip air tickets from Ohio for $1300. That's for three nights. I went to US Airways Vacations.com. I did alot of research and couldn't find anything cheaper. It also depends on the time you go. If we had waited another week we couldn't have gotten it that cheap. Good luck!

There is no website that will give you the cheapest price. There are a lot of factors that determine what price you are going to pay. Example what time of year you are travelling, the day, what else is happening in Vegas at that time, etc. The bottom line is you have to be flexible and shop around. Here are some tips I found that might help you:

Another thing I have done that worked in my favor was to go to priceline.com and name your own price. Put in a very low price and you might be surprise they will match your price.
good luck

Book with promo codes (get freebees and such...)
Booking from the official hotel is the only way you can really make sure you get the cheapest rates.
