Its not watching the people win money, its the emotion. People like to watch game shows but usually can't go on gameshows themselves. Many people like to play along with the game, which explains why during Deal or no Deal you hear your neighbor shouting "NO YOU MORON PICK 14". Apparently it costs to go on a game show and middle class people have no need for that. Quite frankly, I don't think that the people care how much the winners win. But it is fun to watch something like millionaire and test yourself in a fun way. And its not watching the other people win money, it is the emotion of the choice. You have no idea how nervous those people on deal or no deal are, when in any second they can lose one million dollars. The spectators can wtach the show worry free and mumble something like "I would have picked 6". Overall, I think its more about watching people lose money. Its about records, like "Will this person do better than the guy last week". And of course it is about the commercials :-).

I don't know...it's not like it's a quiz show where we can play along. It's just a long drawn out boring show where people guess randomly and get greedy. I used to watch it when it first started but it really is too boring to even bother recording and fast-forwarding through like I do with some of the shows like "Who's Smarter than a 5th Grader" where at least I see a question and get to answer it to see how smart I am.

I think it gives us hope that we can succeed by sheer luck as well.
If you want to get REALLY psychological about it, Joseph Campbell wrote a book called "The Hero of a Thousand Faces" that explains all about stories of heroes who succeed despite ridiculous odds (Luke Skywalker, Frodo, James Bond, Aladdin, Hansel and Gretel, Odysseus...) and game show contestants end up being a very-very-very short and accessible version of these stories.
It was the first Reality TV, born at a more innocent time when we were more interested in watching people win than watching them lose.

I love to watch those shows, also watch 1 vrs 100. I think that you kind of feel as if you´re a part of it and you´re rooting for th contestant hoping they win something. watching it also makes you feel like if one day you might be able to go to one of those shows and win something, it gives people at home the hope to think they will also win someday. Besides, its always posible to win something-you can always send a video tape applying to be on the show, they can call you back and you can be on the show, its not that impossible to be a contestant on the show. I´m gonna send my tape to Deal or no Deal.

Its the excitement that it happens to real people. But even the home audience gets a chance at winning money, by texting the case that has the winning number. Someone won $1 Mil supposedly last week I think.

I think watching other people win makes us happy...means youre a good person. Like when I go to Vegas, I really like seeing someone win big. I think it may be me next time. Im sure there are people out there who wont watch or watch with some jealousy.

well i don't really seem to know but usually shows like that give some people the actual feeling of intelligence in knowing the questions and answers giving them small hope that one day they will be given a chance to be on a show and win money themselves and to fill that small void in their lives

I don't care for those shows, myself. To me, it's boring because there's no mental challenge. It's just completely about the money, period.
But I think people like them because money is like a god to a lot of people.

Because we insist in torturing ourselves by shouting the right answers, choosing the right portfolios etc..then we say to ourselves or whoever is next to us "see if I was there I would have been a millionaire right now...they should have me as a contestant not those loser dumb idiots who don't know about anything" and so on.
