Generally, they're fairly reliable, but it's good to watch 'em. Many different items go on/off sale each and every week, and there are thousands of items, period. There's bound to be a mistake here or there.

I trust the ones at the supermarket I go to, Harris Teeter. I've never caught a mistake there.

But when I was in college I worked at a supermarket where there would be occasional pricing errors. I would average a couple customers per shift who noticed that they were overcharged.

I watch the price on the screen when the item gets scanned. I know all to well the bar code and the actual price might be two different prices, usually higher. Therefore, I can safely say I don't trust the store bar codes.

It is not the bar codes that you shouldnt trust its the register. The way a scanner works is you scan the bar code of an item and set the price on the computer. So if it is wrong, any item with that bar code will ring up incorrectly.

The bar codes are fine, it's the programming of the stores that cause the problems. It's mostly human error that results in inaccurate pricing.

It's not the bar code technology that I don't trust, it's the stores who purposely manipulate the data entry.

You know, i've learned to be cautious and ever since i've learned to read some bar code i've become a little concerned. II II III I IIII I = obey and II I II I III II I I IIIII II I I IIIII III IIIIII II I=work and consume. But the one that really had me wondering was II II III I IIII I III II II II IIII III II I I II I I I II I I IIIIIII IIIIII I II I II I II I I IIIIIII I II IIIII IIIIIIIIII IIIII I I I I I I IIIIIIIIII I III I I I II IIIII I III II I I I IIII III= obey the d' anpal (which turns out to be some alien race) and humans will soon be destroyed so d' anpal are welcome on this puny weak planet
