In most places squirrels are considered varmints or vermin. As such, there is no actual season, you are free to pop them at any time. You probably want to check with your state wildlife department to confirm that.

The only difference between rats and squirrels, both rodents, is squirrels had a good P.R. agent that decided to stick a bushy tail on their butts. Squirrels also tend to be weasels, but I'm not gonna go there.
