Are fake Diplomas, certificates etc. obtainable for a fee in the Philippines. If, as I think, they are, then maybe this is what the show is having a go at. And , if this is so, shouldn't all this indignation be aimed at rectifying this situation.

& you are right. but that is not the point.
& i know that it was meant to be funny & all the other kinds of excuses, but being funny over the expense of a race, ethnicity or any protected class is not only uncool but morally wrong & politically incorrect, & you should know that. generalizing something that is not universal even though it is a factual stereotype to a certain degree is still what? yes, something that shouldn't have been done.
do you suppose they would dare say something like that directed towards african americans, gays, muslims or mexico? if they did, they would have a war on their hands by now.

Yes, PC, such documents were indeed obtainable then. I knew of people who went to Recto to acquire diplomas or certifications or even land titles for the purpose of presenting them to overseas employers or to immigration interviewers.
But the government has, even way, way back then, tried to curb these activities and is still presently trying to rectify the situation. Also, overseas employers and embassies, knowing about such practices, now put such documents under close scrutiny and do check on the veracity of these documents being presented by calling on the proper authorities where these documents come from, i.e. the schools or private and gov't companies and agencies.

MANILA — The government is well on its way to putting an end to the perennial problem of “diploma mills” or fake diplomas often sold in some of Manila’s main streets, particularly Recto.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Dr. Carlito Puno said the antidote to this long-time problem is through the centralization of the printing of diplomas.
“There is much more to be accomplished if government agencies cooperate with one another. In this case, the CHED has linked up with the National Printing Office (NPO) in the production of college diplomas with security features,” Puno said.
He said the paper to be used in the printing of diplomas would be the same paper used in printing the Philippine currency. Aside from a serial number, a bar code with the graduate’s photo not visible to the naked eye, would be among the other security features to be included.
Puno said the system to curb diploma mills would be carried out in one or two years.
The CHED chairman said that this system would prevent Filipino professionals from being banned by foreign employers as there have been numerous cases that fake diplomas were detected.
Puno also informed the students that the CHED has expanded its scholarship and loan program for them.
“The President has issued an order that we expand our scholarship and loan programs for students 10 to 20 times,” he said.
Puno was the guest Cabinet man at the NBN 4’s TV program, “The Cabinet Speaks.” The program is hosted by the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) Undersecretary for Broadcast Martin Antonio Crisostomo.

Now that Desperate Housewives has gotten its TV ratings and the Philippine Government shaken from slumber, the brouhaha should now die down.

You could very well have been the 50th that day, but I will be blind and maybe shoot the 51st instead. Can't afford to lose a valuable and sensible YAPper.
To answer your question, that would still be a put down. In advertising, we work on "stimulus and response". That little detail will still be overlooked, and the whole impact would still be the same. And those protests would still be there. Yes, even if we know that with this slant, the statement would be, unfortunately, 100% correct.

Oh dear me! I seriously doubt if the dUmbdUmb writer of the show is even aware of the "diploma mill problem" in the Philippines. But you're right, it is a problem we need to address. Long-over due, in fact!
And no, I'm not affected at all by the "so-called racial slur". Not then...not now. I know better and no dUmb TV show will tell me otherwise.
