Have most of them been killed? evacuated or does anyone know?

The International Fund for Animal Welfare went to the Bagdad Zoo to help the animals there a couple years ago as they were not in good condition. Very little press is written about it but I doubt it is a happy story

Parts of the world like the countries you mentioned have very little wildlife. Both climates are harsh and desert like. There will be very few species and they'll certainly be as far away from people as possible.
Don't worry about them, they will survive.

About 4000 have been killed (you mean American soldiers, right?)

(I refer you to the Hamdania, Haditha, Al-Mahmudiyah massacres/rapes etc).
