There are plenty of ghost stories in New Orleans, most of them true. New Orleans is my hometown and the most haunted city in America. The most famous haunting is the LaLauries' Mansion in the French Quarter and the tales of tortured slaves and their ghosts appearing to subsequent owners of the house after the mid-1800s. Decades ago, French Quarter residents who lived anywhere near that house would go out of their way to avoid walking past it after dark.
Another famous New Orleans ghost story is the naked woman who walks the roof of a certain house in the French Quarter on the coldest nights in December. There is a tragic love story behind that one.
The scariest one in my opinion is the one about the Sultan's Palace, also in the French Quarter, and truly creepy. It's also the most violent ghost story.
If you want to know these stories in more detail, go to an online bookstore or amazon.com and order the book, New Orleans Ghosts by Victor Klein. It's a small paperback and an easy read. Most, but not all of the tales he relates are true.

Second to Haunted History Tours. Very exciting, and even though you've learn approximately those reviews earlier than, it is a laugh to listen to the (relatively hammed) up reviews at the same time going for walks round within the French Quarter darkness. Walking round within the Quarter darkness on my own isn't advocated, so ths is a exotic approach to spend the night, going for walks round, making bar stops, having fun with a cocktail at the same time taking note of the ghost reviews of those appropriate constructions.

I understand that Anne Rice has a website again this year just in time for Halloween. I haven't checked it out, but I'll get back to you on that.
