I have a five hour delay there in December. Is it a nice airport view? And is it clean? Do they allow people to go outside of the airport and view the town?

It will most likely take you about an hour to get from your plane out of the airport, maybe a bit less if your luggage is checked to your final destination. The train ride to the center of town is 20 minutes and runs about every 10 minutes.
Going back you should have half an hour in case your train is delayed, not often but you do not want to miss your flight. Security and walking through the airport take at least one hour, over two hours on a busy day, and you have to be at the gate half an hour before the plane is planned to leave.
That leaves you half an hour in town, one hour if you cut it fine.
I would not do it, especially with the risks involved in missing your plane.
And that is assuming you have or do not need a visa.

The airport is not bad, clean, many places to sit and several smaller and bigger restaurants. There are shops in the 'secure' zone, even a museum with quality paintings. (They opened it because the Rijksmuseum is partly closed for redecoration.) It is between the two terminals, in the walkway that connects them.

Schiphol is a great airport. It's definitely very clean and safe.

There's several great places to look at planes taking off and landing and such from inside the airport and from the panorama terrace but you might not want to be on the terrace too long in december. There's not much of a view besides that, you can't see any windmills or tulipfields from the airport, especially not in december but if there's snow (unlikely) it will be a great view. Schiphol Airport is a really nice airport, you won't mind being there.

There's loads of shops at Schiphol Airport and many lounges, bars and restaurants. Even a Casino and apparently even an art museum now. I hadn't heard of that yet. Make sure that you're allowed to leave the waiting area at all though, if not, I think most shops will even be off limits. I think sometimes you can and sometimes you can't, depends on the airline or something, not sure, sorry.

Five hours is really too short to visit Amsterdam itself, or, if you're adventurous and don't mind rushing you could give it a try. I would advise to you to just hang out at the Airport though, it will be more relaxing for you. If you want to see Amsterdam, just stay longer...

I'm surprised nobody has given you the link to the very good Schiphol Airport website, it's http://www.schiphol.com Just choose your language and check out all the facilities.

Enjoy your stay in the Netherlands! If you have any more questions please let us know...

Skipold is fantastic.. great shops. As long as you are not what they call "in transit" you will prolly be able to leave the lounge. The airport is a long way by car from town..if you intend to go to town, take the train.. it's way cheaper and it's faster. Not sure it's worth it for 5 hours though.

Schiphol is very safe. Not the prettiest airpot (by my standards) but clean and safe. The shopping and healthy food choices arent bad either.

With your lay-over...As in all airports..... dont leave your luggage unattended for a second . But this is especially true at at Schiphol or else the secuirity guards get really cranky.
