The first one I remember was Philip Harben, a bearded gentleman who was very passionate about his cooking and also meticulous about cleanliness, I believe he died rather prematurely.

Definitely Julia Child. She studied French cooking extensively and co-wrote the first majorly published French cookbook for American women. She did this at a time when women were leaning to the convenient canned foods and she wanted to show American women that it's fun to cook and make GREAT food. She was on the air for 5 decades. Her TV kitchen is now on display at the Smithsonian American History Museum.

I'm glad I reread your question - I saw your picture and thought you were talking about the first (Indian) Chief on TV. Anyhow, I remember Julia Child, the Frugal Gourmet (Jeff Smith?), and Graham Kerr.
