You can do this two ways.

If your base unit and the DWL2100 will work with WDS (wireless distribution system) USE IT!
WDS / repeater will cause all settings from the "base" to be propogated throughout the system and thus all security etc will be carried through. (Same SSID, same channel, same security etc) No ethernet needed.

Otherwise you will have to use the repeater mode (which is another form of WDS) which does not always carry the security from the base unit properly. You will need to test that setting. (You may have to use WEP since WPA does not work with WDS - pre-shared might but you will have to check it.)

Repeater with AP would put you into an OPEN access point on the DWL2100 (you would be inviting more people that you want!) You would have to set a second SSID, Channel, and WEP settings inside the dwl2100 in this case.

There are actually OUTDOOR units built to do this very thing and they have higher power output than the dlink. It will work but it is a lot of trouble. You should visit some of the specialty radio shops (on the net) and see what all is available.

The advantage is that outdoor units are built to work in the outdoors! You will need to "box" your dwl2100 into a waterproof container and run cables to an external antenna at the top of the pole. The cables will cause signal loss. The outdoor units have enough power to compensate for that loss.
In fact some are usable at distances of several miles! Nearly all are Power over ehternet as well.

Which begs the question, how are you planning on powering this unit? (You can use solar cells and a battery - not cheap.)

PS - this will cut the speed by 30-40% (sorry, thats just the facts)
Good Luck, have fun.

assuming it's not too far and it supports this, setup the dwl2100ap to bridge between it and the siemens wireless device. Then your friend (assuming it's not too far again) would just have to connect to the dwl2100ap as a client. Some access points don't support bridging and client connections concurrently, in which case your friend would have to get a wireless accesspoint and enable a bridging between your house and his house, or if the dwl2100ap supports it setup a dual bridge. Most residential AP's I've seen just do one bridge and then connect to an ethernet device on the other side, maybe if that's the case, have two AP's connected back to back with a crossover cable and they could relay for you, otherwise I'd look for a higher end AP that's my specifically for relay/bridging and is ruggederized for the outdoors.
