I went to University at Buffalo. I really, really liked living in Buffalo. It generally isn't too cold there, the lake, which provides the moisture for the snow, keeps things a little warmer than the rest of the region.

Most of the University at Buffalo is in Amherst, NY. Amherst is a very safe suburb. Try to find things to do away from campus as that is when Buffalo really shines.

Buffalo has a rich architectural history with several Frank Lloyd Wright houses, interesting churches, etc. It has the Albright-Knox modern art gallery. The chicken wings and pizza are outstanding at most places (please don't order from Dominoes when you live there and make sure you try Pinzone's pizza, Bocce club pizza and Leonardi's pizza).

The local media are infatuated with the Bills and Sabres, so be ready for constant sports team coverage.

Oh, and the school is pretty good too!

good luck!

UB is quite a good school, so that works well for you. You should get a good education there, which is reason number one for going.

Like the rest of the Northeast, we do get a little cold in the winter. I think the lowest average temperatures of the year, in mid-January, are a high of 30 and a low of 17. So it doesn't take much of a warm spell of go above freezing. Still, we have been known to go for a couple of weeks without going over 32, so I'd buy a parka.

The one problem with the UB campus in Amherst (undergrad campus for the most part) is that it is hardly charming. It's built away from everything, and the architecture is grim. Amherst is a nice enough suburb, and if you get to the Main Street campus it's an easy subway ride downtown.

I liked Buffalo a lot when I lived there, people are very friendly and nice but it gets really cold in the winter so take a lot of jackets, sweaters, etc
