The net is there to slow the ball down after you make a shot. If the net was not there the ball would just drop through and you would have to chase it.
Another benefit of the net is that it is easier to tell if the shot was made. Since the only way into the net is through the hoop you know the person made the shot. If the net is not there the ball won't slow down and it might appear as if you did not make the shot.
BTW - the first basketball hoops were actually played with a real wooden peach basket as the hoop.

The original basket was really a basket and shaped much the same. When the hoop was designed, they wanted it to resemble the basket. THey considered using just the hoop, but without the netting, it was difficult to be sure that the ball has passed through the hoop. The net then shows this by it's flutter and noise.

It's easier to see where the rim is. Also for the fans and other people who watch. Also to slow the ball down. It sucks to play basketball on a court with a rim without a net. I've tried it. It sucks.

It aids in keeping the ball on the court after a made shot. But more importantly, it illustrates a made shot. Otherwise, it would be difficult to tell if a shot went in (a perfect shot that doesn't touch the rim at all) without out the net.

Without a net, it is much harder to make a shot, due to the way you perceive the hoop. With a net, it makes the hoop more "3D" and therefore easier to place a shot in the hoop; try it... it really is true.

It keeps the ball from rolling away if it goes through without hitting the rim. I can remember how I used to hate when the net even got a rip in it. Even a little tear and you have to chase the ball.

It really helps you make the shot ( it's easier to see). and another reason, they make that "swish" sound, and i love that kind of sound. and the last reason, a very spectacular play, lee humphrey from florida gators, last season against the oregon ducks in the elite eight, he snaps the net off when he made a three, you need perfect rotation to do that.

well maybe because of the " Swoosh " sound which gives players confident throughtout the game
and also
it for to let the players and refs to know that the ball went in.....
sometime when you shoot the ball and the ball doesnt touch the rim without the net, it is hard to tell if it went in especially in streetcourt
