The butler is a senior servant in a large household. Usually the butler is the most senior staff member, although in the great houses of the past, the household was sometimes divided into departments with the butler in charge of the dining room (including the wine cellar) and pantry, and sometimes the entire parlour floor.
The word "butler" derives from the Old French "bouteillier", (meaning "cup bearer"), from "bouteille", ("bottle") and ultimately from Latin. The role of the butler, for centuries, has been that of the chief steward of a household, the attendant entrusted with the care and serving of wine and other bottled beverages (which in ancient times might have represented a considerable portion of the household's assets).

A maidservant or in current usage maid is a female employed in domestic service. Once part of an elaborate hierarchy in great houses, today the maid may be the only domestic worker that upper and even middle-income households can afford. In the Western world, comparatively few households can afford live-in domestic help, usually compromising on periodic cleaners.
Maids perform typical domestic chores such as cooking, ironing, washing, cleaning the house, grocery shopping, walking the family dog, and taking care of children. In many places in some poor countries, maids often take on the role of a nurse in taking care of the elderly and people with disabilities. Maids are often expected to work at least fifteen hours per day.

A butler can be a male or female. A butler being a male is a stereotype like that of a nurse just being a woman. A butler is a household manager of sorts. They are in charge of the household help and have many roles as that of a chef, waiter, valet, as many stereotype depict but they are a far more diverse than that. They hire contractors to repair damage to a household if need be and can also handle the owners decor and wardrobe. The maid is again a stereotype of a female housekeeper, a housekeeper is male or female . A maid is in fact traditionally a female personal servant responsible for the Lady of the household. Duties include: care of the wardrobe and a Lady's private rooms, care, cleaning, pressing and mending of a Lady's clothes, preparation of clothes for packing.

Butler is the overall administrator of the house.
Maid just cleans, maybe cooks.

The butler can tell the maid what to do, not vice versa.
