What do you use to sand the wood (hand sanding, orbital etc)? any specific brand or type of polyurathane or polyacrylic finish?

Best initially would be strip the bark. Allow decet dry/cure time for the various pieces (In effect, monitoring any cracking; warping; twisting in the process)

Sanding WITH the grain is certainly better than creating Marks from any machine; and in many instances one need not stress over sanding; unless you're talking about pieces large enough to be planks. Perhaps I'm thinking too rustic/natural???

Obviously for planks from logs; you'd likely need some type of band saw and planer.

POLY suggests the same base substance/ formulations; no matter the name tagged to it. I happen to prefer a Matte or Satin finish; but that's just me.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/dOHHk
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
