Not a good idea. The act of keeping one as a pet will cause it to experience great terror, inappropriate and damaging nutrition, loss of it's right to enjoy reproduction and rearing if it's young, and terrible loneliness and boredom. Wild bats are capable of living over 25 years. Bats kept as pets rarely survive more than one year.
Additionally, bats are protected by law at many levels. It is illegal in the UK , and in the States I believe. Regulations govern the taking of bats from the wild, and any exchange between individuals or organizations.

Bats will not bond with you even if they have spent all their lives in captivity, They are fragile and hard to care for if they can't fly, and if they can, they will not like being in a cage, and if let loose they will *go* everywhere. There also are some medical risks such as rabies. Bats are wild animals, not pets, don't get one

I wouldn't. They are very high in carrying rabies and shouldn't be handled. If you got one from a "breeder" if there is such as thing and it was never outdoors then maybe its safe. You could build bat houses outside to attract bats (they eat bugs and are good to have around, but not to touch).

An alternative...a pet rat. They are safe, smart, clean, friendly, and just a little different. THey make good pets. (just don't pick up a wild one)

They're considered wildlife and only rehabbers have licenses that allow them to have a bat, legally.

You can call your local DNR (Department of Natural Resources) for your state and ask, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal. You can't keep songbirds, deer, raptors, owls, raccoons, etc. without a special permit or license.

You and everyone in your home would be at great risk of getting rabies if bitten. It's possible to be bitten and not realize it until you have symptoms of rabies.

Yes, a friend of mine in Carlsbad NM (Famous caverns) tried that but he mysteriously died of rabies soon after.
