Yes, it's called 'The Indifference to Others Line.'
( at its simplest )
I don't know if I'm percieved one way or the other, and in many respects, it doesn't much matter as the perception of another may take a time to become known to me. And it's only then that I can maybe set about to change this ~ if I want or need to.
Ones own perceptions of others and situations should really always be open to re~evaluation anyway.

No, not really, they are actually worlds apart if you know anything about human nature. Cockiness is ALWAYS the mask for insecurity and the need to project yourself because you are worried about how other people view you. It never fails that people who have a reputuation as cocky, are always lacking confidence. They self promote, and when a person tells you how great they are, what they are really saying is how empty they fell. Cocky people are nothing but poseurs, to the highest degree, and they just broadcast it in their actions, and the way they talk. Confident people have NOTHING to prove, and as a result ,dont act out in defense, the way cocky people do, because they are worried about being EXPOSED!!

There IS a difference between being Quietly confident and cocky! Quietly confident means you know you can, cocky is trying to convince other people and yourself that you can

It's actually possible to be both. So they can't be mutually exclusive.
Now there are some people who are cocky, but actually are that way because they lack confidence. They feel that they have to stick their chests out to make them feel higher than others around them.
A better question to ask yourself if you are confident is: Am I letting my confidence get to my head?
If you AREN'T confident, the question then should be 'how can I become confident in a way that won't make me cocky?'

It's really in other peoples perception.
A confident, secure, honest person will view you as a competent, powerful, and solid person, because they are not threatened by you.
A person who is not secure themselves, or who has something to hide, will definitely be threatened by you and assume that you are cocky or arrogant.
It's kind of like beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Cockiness is in the eye of the insecure....
That sounds dirty...... ha ha!

The difference is self-promotion (aka jibber jabber).
Someone can be confident and you'd never know about it since they don't advertise it. Also, they let their actions do the speaking. Those that are cocky are the one's that talk smack. Sometimes they can back up their words and most times they can't. I think that's the difference between the two.
Confidence = do'ers. Cocky = talkers

Yes a very fine line, confidence is a quiet yet sure attitude, these people are quielty sure of them selves and their abilities. Being cocky is someone who brags and is loud about their achievements.

I always find it depends who I am talking to and how strong my northern English accent is to them. It makes me sound a lot more definite than I intend. Therefore, I have often been called arrogant, which is bizarre because inside I feel quite shy inside.
Best not to worry too much about it - you can only ever be yourself.
