Technically, the USA is not a democracy. A democracy is a government where the citizens directly vote on an issue and decide what to do. Obviously, this approach only works in relatively small societies. The USA is actually a republic, because we elect representatives to decide on issues for us. So when someone says we have a republican form of government, that's what they mean, not the political party.

Yes, thank goodness we are not. A democracy is a totalitarian system of government where the majority dictates to everyone else. If the majority decides that owning slaves is proper, the blacks better run like heck. There is no individual liberty. The USA is a constitutional republic. The liberals hate that, but that is the way it is.

The US is a Constitutional republic.

A constitutional republic is a state where the head of state and other officials are elected as representatives of the people, and must govern according to existing constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens. In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separated into distinct branches and the will of the majority of the population is tempered by protections for individual rights so that no individual or group has absolute power. The fact that a constitution exists that limits the government's power, makes the state constitutional.

Presidential directive 51 states that in the event of a catastrophic emergency, which is defined in the document...b) "Catastrophic Emergency" means any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions. The constitution will be suspended along with the bill of rights. I HOPE YOU ALL GET UP TO DATE ON WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR GOVERNMENT. Things are not what they seem. We are not a democracy or a republic anymore, we are a fascist dictatorship with an illusion of choice and freedom!!!!!! Our leaders are selected not elected, wake up!!!!!

Technically, we are a democratic republic.

In a true democracy, everyone votes in every decision - laws, elections, treaties, etc. That's cumbersome with 300 million people.

In a republic, the people elect representatives who do this sort of thing. If they do it well, their constituents re-elect them. If they don't perform so well, they tend to get replaced by someone else.
