About a week ago a spot in my yard began to get soft and sink. It's spreading and getting deeper! The water line isn't anywhere near there and our bill isn't sky high, so it's not that. It could be the sewer line, cuz it's pretty aligned...but if it's NOT THE SEWER, WHAT ELSE COULD CAUSE IT? We don't live near a big body of water...or cliff. It's Ohio...

Your septic tank?

Are you on city sewer, or do you have a septic tank and leach field? It could be a break in a sewer line, or if you have a tank, it could be a failed tank. If it's city sewer, call sewer department. If it's a septic tank, it belongs to the homeowner, so call a contractor to look at it.

When the lot was cleared to build the house, they cut down a big tree and buried the stump below the fill, or ground it just below the surface of the yard. That is the stump and roots finally rotting and leaving air space. Either that or an unmarked grave fell in.

Don't waste another minute, call the Inspection Department at City Hall. If they are already closed for the weekend, call a fire department and tell them the ground is falling in. They will know what to do.

Got caves in the area? They do collapse.

Also, due to the drought we've had this year, the water table is lower than usual and you may have air pockets underground in areas that would normally be filled with water.

i'd recommend throwing down some bags of wood chips to assist suck up a number of the water inflicting the problem. different than that i'd seem into the thank you to get greater effective water drainage. solid success.

sounds creepy to me,unless it is an old unused septic tank.i hope it is not some old part of a forgotten graveyard sinking
