The cold war really started after 1945 but the first serious event was when the Russians tried to block western access to West Berlin through East Germany and the only link with the outside world was by air through a narrow flight path. That was in1947.
Berlin was divided into four zones for the Russians , British , American and French. Access to the Russian zone was always difficult.
When the East German government took over responsibility for East Berlin the situation remained the same but many East Germans found ways to escape to the West for a better life.
To stop this the East Germans Built the Berlin Wall in 1967 which cut off all access except for one tightly controlled point called Checkpoint Charlie.
Many east germans died trying to cross the wall.
The Berlin Wall was demolished in 1989.
During the Cold War tunnels were built under the wall to get people out and also to tap into the East German communications for the purpose of espionage.
