The * character is called a Kleene star and the . character is usually called a single-charaacter wildcard.

They're useful for matching characters which you either don't know, or don't care.

* stands for any and all characters
? stands for one character

*.doc will list all files with a .doc extension

filename.* will list all files beginning with the word filename regardless of extension

file*.doc will list all files beginning with file and with a .doc extension

filen?me.doc fill list all files beginning with filen and ending with me, with a .doc extension

like filename.doc
filenime.doc
filenome.doc
******************
It comes in handy when you are looking for a file where you remember only part of the name or know it has a particular extension.
