Every polynomial function of degree n >= 1 has at least one complex zero. A corollary is every polynomial function of degree >= 1 has n complex zeros, counting multiplicities.

What this means is that if you have a polynomial function
y=f(x) of degree 3, then you will have three roots (zeros). If y= f(x) is of degree 10, then you will have 10 roots.

These roots can be real, pure imaginary, or complex. Pure imaginary and complex roots always come in pairs.

A real number is a complex number whos imaginary part is 0.
a+ib is a compex number. If a = 0, then it is a pure imaginary number. If b = 0 then it is a real number.
