Both characters take themselves very seriously. They are both very proud, which is what makes them funny. They have the most dignity to lose in the plays, and they do. But at the same time, they have redeeming qualities that make you like them.

they are both objects of ridicule. but it is Malvolio's own fault and Bottom's misfortune that casuses it. Neither character is very bright, even though Malvolio may be educated.
