A B/W film was made about the Native-American who put up the flag on Mt, Suribachi.
He ended up an alcoholic because of his innability to handle fame.
It was a peculiar film because it had 2 endings:
If you stopped it 10 minutes before the end then it had a hopeful ending!
If you let it run to the end then it had a sad ending!
I've seen both films on UK TV (years ago) but I can't think of the name.

Not sure but "Letters from Iwo Jima" is better,,,,made at the same time as "Flags"

Has to be "The Outsider" 1961. Tony Curtis plays Ira Hamilton Hayes.

It is either The American or The Outsider... His name was Ira Hayes.
