Last night our college pastor told us that if you freeze a snake it goes into a hibernation state and when thawed will "come back to life". Is that true?

There are some snakes, like garter snakes, that have some enzymes to help them survive short periods of exposure to freezing temperatures, but once a snake actually freezes, it dies.

I have heard of painted turtle hatchlings being able to survive the freezing of extracellular fluids, but if their cells freeze, they will also die. http://ajpregu.physiology.org/cgi/content/abstract/262/3/R530

Not if it's frozen solid. The ice crystals would destroy the cells. Some of them have natural antifreeze in their blood and can be chilled to 10 degrees F without freezing solid when they hibernate. None would survive being in a 20 below freezer for long.

no. this is false. cryogenics is not that evolved yet. Even in hibernation, the brain and organs do not stop functioning. Once the snake is frozen, the brain will die and the organs will fail to function. Thus causing Mr.Snakers to be a pet-cicle.

It depends on the snake. Some types of snakes, frogs and turtles can freeze solid and "come back to life," because they manufacture a sort of "natural antifreeze." I wouldn't try freezing a snake, though, that would be cruel.

I read one account of a taxidermist that did it. Had a rattlesnake in the freezer, was ready to work with it and took the snake out, once it unthawed, it was alive.
