I have an open lawn without a deck but im getting a chiminea. Is it ok to put a chiminea on grass or should i put something under it like rocks?

Put something under it, if you're going to burn anything inside of it. Otherwise the heat will scorch the grass. If the ground is soft, you may need something even if you don't ever burn anything, as the chiminea may sink into the ground and fall over.

You can get flat blocks about 8 by 16 inches at any Lowe's, Menard's, etc, or you can buy paver stones, too. Pavers will be more expensive, though. They should also have some sort of edging around them to hold them in place. Whichever you use, I would get enough to extend at least 3-4 inches past the edge of the chiminea, on all sides.

It should be okay, but if you plan on moving it and don't want a dead burned spot put some rock under it. Believe it or not one of the craziest thing I ever did was use my chimnea and forgot to put the rock under it (I had moved it and forgot about the rock). The next morning there was a perfectly round hole where the chimnea had been and I had to patch the deck. I just had to laugh.
