I like the name James Matthew. But I wonder if Jamie sounds too feminine as a nickname for a boy? What do you think?

Jamie is not too feminine. It was originally used as a nickname for James.

I think James Matthew is really nice.

Not at all. Jamie has been used as a nickname for both James and Jamesina (and other forms, of course) long before the female Jaime/j'aime craze of the 70s. Odd anyway, since the phrase is pronounced differently, but it really was a very dated phase ... only making the top 100 from 1976-79, and dropping quickly immediately after.

So while Jamie itself is still used for both genders, I really don't think it would be a problem. Especially with James as the given name. It's just a classically unisex nickname, like Sam or Alex might be considered, so it doesn't strike me as particularly feminine in the least. ;)

If it's Jim(my) you'd hoped to avoid, Jem is another option. Hope that helps!

My brother is named James, and as a child he was called Jamie. We moved from one town to the next town, the year he started 7th grade. The first day of school he came home and announced at dinner- Call me Jim- Jamie is a girl's name!
Granted, this was 1975, and the flexibility with uni-sex names has increased tremendously, so in 2007 no one might blink at Jamie as a boy's name. In fact, the Comptroller of one of the vendors I work with is a man named Jamie, so obviously some guys use it. I like it alot, and like my brother, he can always go by Jim or Jimmy when he gets older.

Jamie (not James) is my husbands name and also my name. I grew up with several guys named Jamie and didn't think anything about it being feminine. In fact, I got teased for having a boys' name! The name isn't quite as common now as it was several years ago.

I think Jamie sounds like a boy's name because it is a boy's name. Nickname for James.

When someone says Jamie, I think of a boy (probably because I live in the UK and you don't get many girls called Jamie here). I think Jamie is really nice as a full name or a nickname for a boy.

I think it could go either way. When I think of Jamie I do picture a girl but I'm probably just biased due to the fact that I have a niece named Jaime :D

James Matthew is a lovely name.

I personally don't like Jamie as a boy's name OR a girl's name... If you're going to name him James, why don't you just call him James?

Jamie started out as a boys name but I think that so many people have used it for a girls name that its to feminine to use as a boys name anymore.
I think you should stick w/ James, James Matthew sounds beautiful

I kind of see Jamie as feminine, however, if you are naming him James and using Jamie as a nickname, I think that is okay, he can always have people start calling him James when he is older.
