I run my dishwasher almost everyday and yet it has a terrible "spoiled food" odor. Does anyone have any ideas about getting rid of it without damaging or dulling the stainless steel walls inside?

There is a cleaning booster called Lemi-Shine. I love this stuff. run the dishwasher empty this this. It will clean and also help get rid of any mineral build up in the dishwasher.

Where I live we have such hard water that I also put about 2 Tbsp in with the soap with each wash and I don't get bad smells and the hard water build up is gone. My husband is a plumber and recommends this very highly to customers.

Once in a while, I run a load with about 1/4 cup bleach added to the bottom of the dishwasher.
I also have an anti-bacterial cycle that really cleans things up.

Most of the methods listed here will do a good job, but I've used Tang many times, and that seems to work well. If your dishwasher has a plastic tub, you many never get rid of that stench. Those tubs are pourus, and that's the way it is. Get a dishwasher with a stainless tub next time. You'll never run into this problem again.

this may sound crazy but run a 25 cent package of koolaid (the one with out sugar) through the load. it will clean & freshen with out any staining.

Just put in the detergent section and run a cycle, it will also clean a toilet. (Wow, and we drink this stuff)
Kool Aid also can be used as a dye in paint also Kool Aid in Dannon plain yogurt as a finger paint, your kids will love it and it won't hurt them if they eat it!

if you have access to a lemon or orange tree and if there are lots of them, cut them in half, poke them on top tray, add lots of arm and hammer baking soda along with detergent, also if you have pots and pans with brass bottoms, here is your opportunity to make them shine, turn the hot water heater on high and run the cycle several times
