I'm taking the sat test with the essay portion and am reasonably prepared (This will be my first time) but what format is the essay (5 paragraphs etc) and any tips on the essay or other portions.

You have 25 minutes to write the essay - leaving you almost no time to prepare. Let me tell you what I did the first time I took it...I started writing almost the second I saw the question, meaning I didn't waste any time preparing. I got an 11 on my essay, and I only wrote 4 paragraphs. The weak point of my essay was my conclusion. It would be difficult to manage your time and write a good 5 paragraoh essay...VERY DIFFICULT. It costs many people a good score because they are so stressed to write the 5 paragraph essay that they only have two good paragraphs but the other three are horrible.

A five-p essay isn't what you should be going for. Instead, you might want to have an intro, two paragraphs for supporting examples or a single, extended example, then a conclusion.
