Exactly the same as Windows administrators, but on Unix machines. Setting up machines, controlling users and security, maintaining networks, recovering from user errors and trying to keep everyone happy. Quite a lot of them live in super luxury house or apartments, these are generally the best at their job, and are often unrecognisable as Unix admins. This last rule also applies to Windows and Linux administrators.

Unix is an old operating system. Its built for the days when there were not any PCs (personal computers) and everyone connected their keyboard and monitor to one big computer. Everyone had to have an account.

The adminisitrator managed the system. The accounts, kept the programs running, made sure that the users didnt messup the server or mess with each other. Think of it as the principle in a school.

Now Linux, Mac, Windows all have administrators but since its often a computer with only one user it doesnt really have the function of the old unix admins.

I bet there is a lot of people who are wondering that. A lot of UNIX (and Solaris=more obscure form of Unix) admins hate Windows. They hate not only Microsoft Windows but any operating systems that allows a person to accomplish a task with few mouse clicks. These Unix admins prefare to work on a command line. As another poster pointed out, Unix admins are known for their reclusiveness.

Most of them are dungeon masters... some of them live in their parent's basements. They tell obscure jokes, and sometimes grow beards.
