Hi, as a mom of a baby born with jaundice I completely understabd. Luckily, when treated jaundice represents no risk at all to long term health of your baby. My baby girl's bilirrubin levels were at 18 when they told me they had to put her under the lights, she stayed for 2 nights, then we went home. She's never had any problems that had any relation with it. It was very hard for me tough, even tough jaundice is not serious, I am a new mom and I wanted my baby at home with me. I always got to the hospital at the earliest time I was allowed in and left when the nurses told me to (and I mean pm time). She's an active 8 month old crawler. Don't worry, everything is gonna be fine. **Hugs**.

Normally If he is under the lights there is not much to worry about. The lights cause the bilirubin to change and break down into something his body can get rid of. Your pediatrician should be able to give you a time frame depending on how high the bilirubin was to start out with. Ask the pediatrician as they have been doing that for years and can judge how long it takes.
Where I worked at the Ped ordered the baby to have formula to help the process. If your baby is breat fed you can get one of the feeders that has a little tube that you tape close to your nipple so the baby thinks he is getting the formula from your breast.
The baby's dr can tell you all that. I worked in the nursery and we always had baby's under lights.

Hi,
How old is your baby? I know it usually shows up within 2 to 4 days after the baby is born. The docs usually tell you to let a little more light him them to help. You should still go home in normal time. If it's a severe case, they put the baby's under the lamp to help rid it. Also, the sometimes advise you to feed them a little more to help it pass in there stool. My son had a very mild case that cleared up within a few days. We sat him by the window & doors to let the sunlight hit him. It's nothing to worry about! Here is a link with a little more info. Congrats on your baby! http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/pregnancy_newborn/common/jaundice.html

He will be fine. Just go and visit him and touch him and speak with him...he will be out soon. Talk to the nurses and doctors though every time you go there.
Good luck !
