It's usually about a 5 hour drive, if you don't hit traffic in L.A. too bad.

I am native New Yorker (graduated with a NY regents HS diploma and a SUNY A.S.) and I went to SDSU last year. I have lived in San Diego for 2 years (as a New Yorker and my fellow NY friends who live here, not really our kind of place, people are smug, racist jerks and the pizza is bad). My advice to you, based just on my educational experience is to stay away from SDSU! SDSU is WAY below your aptitude if you came from a NY high school and left with at least a C or better. The stuff you will be doing in at SDSU in your senior year, you did in your senior year of NY high school, no joke! And even that stuff is too hard for most of their students! The students, in general terms, are morons and/or spoiled rich kids who could care less about what they are doing and just drink beer and do drugs, but are a bore to hang out with. The majority of the professors are just as apathetic. SDSU is the school you go to as a California HS grad when you have no other options outside of community college. . You will not be able to afford living downtown as a working student, the beach or any other nice place without a few roommates unless you can pay the $1500 + rent (that's for a 1 bedroom). I pay almost $1K and live in a crappier part of town. Don't even get me started on the traffic... If you want to move to San Diego, I recommend UCSD (my man is getting his PhD there) and to visit here first, extensively. I really wanted to love this place before I got here, but I was so sad when I did and realized that it is just one giant, dirty mall built next to the ocean with a few exceptions. San Diego is a fun place for a vacation and to hang out for a few days, but in reality, it is an all around sucky place to live.

Roughly 300 miles, according to Mapquest.com.
