All valid answers so far; and no suggestion is prohibitively expensive. With no disrepect meant I also chuckled with the answer of BEATING A PATH.
Obviously you must want something decorative; or have some aesthetic agenda in mind.
RIVER ROCK by the bag covers approx. 2 sq. ft. at approx 2 inches thick. A cost might be in the $3 to $4 range. Pavers can be purchased at 12 16 18 inch squares usually, and on sale I've purchased truckloads under $3 each.
With added effort you can grade an area; lay a weed barrier; frame a walk with treated lumber; or stone; brick; etc. You can Flush the path to ground level; have it above ground level; and or just let weeds and grass grown between pavers.
If you wish to spend a bit more get Flagstone/slate pieces. Pour concrete in a framed path space. If you want to not stress about barefoot; get RED Volcanic rock.
In any case there are multiple options; and at your choice for expense and effort.

I once made one from recycled sidewalk.
I had a pile of big pieces of concrete.
I used a hammer to break the pieces down to a size and shape I could use and then leveled a pathway and layed them in like stepping stones. The arrangement is what made it look nice. Then I secured it by transplanting grass plugs from a thick part of the yard. When they grew in and it was weed whacked it looked pretty good.
How cheap is that?
My latest project was our driveway.
I just started bring home all the solid concrete blocks I could find. ((3"thick)
When the stack got big enough or I had the time, I would lay down a row. Now it's about 10 X 15 ft.

Just keep walking from your gate to your deck. Pretty soon you will have a path in the grass that cost you nothing. Can't get any cheaper than that.

Both previous answers are good. I definitely recommend using screws and maybe a little glue also. I build a lot of items from various woods and really like using drywall screws with a screw gun. They are coarse thread and somewhat self counter-sinking. However, if you want to take the easy way for your gate, buy a pre-made gate or section of fence from Lowes or Home Depot and cut it to size. Then trim the edges as you like. Personally, I would rather build it myself. Good luck.

Large brick pavers - they don't even have to connect, you just have to be able to step on them. Stepping stones do the same thing, I just like brick better - less slippery in the winter.

Go on FreeCycle.org and join a group in your city, and then ask for used brick, flagstone, etc. People have that stuff to get rid of, and it's free for you to just go get it.
