Well, if it's night time, you could probably see the north star and head north. During the evening or morning hours, see where the sun is rising or setting. (Example, east and west) then you can turn your body respectively and face north.

At its highest point in the day sky the sun is dead on due South.
At night use the pole star (using the pointers from the Plough)or If you are South of the equator use the stars of the Southern Cross.
All the stuff about moss etc is also a great guide as well.

If you know atleast what direction is one of the four it is easy to figure out the others. Like If I am going out east (Long Island - Hapmtons, NY) I know that behind me is West that making North to my left and South to my right. It actually spells out the word NEWS in a shape of the letter Z. Hope this isn't as comfusing as it sounds.

Listen for little tell-tale signs such as, "Ey-up, truble at mill". When you hear this, or something not dissimilar to "Wye eye Maan"! You know you're facing north. Similarly, if you here someone saying, "Gore blyme gov. all the best"! whilst touching his cloth cap; you're almost certainly facing South. Under such circumstances, a 180 deg turn is recommended.

Hope this helps.

You use the sun and divide angles.
On this page, follow the link in the first paragraph: "use your watch as a compass when the sun is shining."

Well if it is daytime and the sun is to the right or left you can head north. Watch the suns movement for 30 minutes . If you live in Colorado you see where the mountains are compared to where you are
