Very much so. Athens had a direct democracy. We have a Representative one.
That is just a result of size. Now some small towns still have direct democracy, where the citizens come in and vote on issues.
Also, women now have the vote, and we have no slaves. Back in the times of Athens, if you ran for leader and lost, you were banished from the city for 10 years.

Sure it has:
The first democracy was in classical Greece in Athens.
The main voting body was the popular Assembly and they voted on issues every day with pebbles (black for no) and white (for yes).
The main general was more of a military leader that conducted wars. The second in command were imperial treasurers, 10 military generals and an annual panel of jurors. The people that made bills or proposals were the popular assembly which were male Athenian there could be between 51-1501 members. What makes the earliest form of democracy so unique? The people had a direct hand in the government they made the laws and policies.
We are not a democracy we are a Federated Republic, The United States is more comparable to Ancient Rome than Greece....or some fascist governments.

Democracy, per se, has not changed. It is still the rule of the people by the people and it still requires 100% participation to work.
Today's use of the word 'democracy', however, refers to a socio/economic system that is best defined as socialism.

BTW, the U.S.A. is NOT a democracy but a republic. A representative democracy, if you will. We do not now nor have we ever had 100% participation in voting so we choose representatives who meet and 'represent' the 'will of the people' while determining the law of the land.

A look at the recent amnesty bill outcry and the continual reintroduction of it under different names and/or concealing of it in voluminous 500+ page bills will tell you how much they represent us.
