I am a history major at UCLA and I'm considering teaching at a community college. Would I need a Ph.D for that? I wouldn't mind teaching at a different state...how does it work in yours?

the one where i teach part time has different requirements in different departments. some departments and courses do not even require a BA/BS, just years of experience in the subject
the department i am in requires graduate work, but not a masters, though i have two. some departments require a PhD, though i can see absolutely no reason why

The formal requirement at most community colleges will be only a master's. However, there are a lot of Ph.D.s floating around in fields like that, and if they get the choice between hiring someone with a Ph.D. or someone who only has a Master's, they will almost always hire the Ph.D., so you may have trouble getting a job with just the master's.

In community college you can teach with a masters degree, but each state has its own laws. Check with the community college you want to teach at and see what specific requirements are. I am applying teach at DeVry with my Masters. Waiting to hear back

Most accredited community [1st two year] colleges accept 18 hours of graduate work in the field as sufficient. Obviously, a masters will do.

I think within the college itself the requirements are different. The community college in my city does not require PhDs. Some universities don't even require a PhD if it is in a specific field. I have had professors at both community college and at the university that have not yet earned their PhD.

I think it depends more on the school than the state. My cc in MN, anyway, varies greatly. Some of my profs have a masters, some doctorates. My interpersonal comm. prof did all of the course credits for her masters, she just didn't ever do a thesis (and has no intention of).
