I have been told not to hibernate them because I am inexperience and I do not want to breed them. How do I make sure they don't hibernate?

Just keep them in the house in tanks with basking lights and a UV light.Be aware that they will still slow down and sleep more, and may be more susceptible to respiratory infections. This will not stop a female from laying eggs, though, even if she has not been with a male, and there is no chance that the snapper will breed with the box turtle;it's impossible,so you have nothing to worry about in that department.

my daughter found a very small box turtle in a near by creek about 2 months ago. It is already trying to hibernate even tho I have a light on it at least 12 hours a day. I am concerned that it may be dying. What should we do.

Increase the time that you keep their lights on to 14 hrs a day and increase the basking temperature a little if they still seem inactive.
My tortoise isn't hibernating this year either and this is what I was advised to do.

If you keep them in their warm environment they will not hibernate. They hibernate because of the cold. So keep your usual situation and they will be ok.

They won't hibernate if you keep the temperature up where it belongs- hibernation is stimulated by cool temperatures.
