I was tempted to say Guy Fawkes. in fairness many very good men have entered parliament over the years, so I will not state the obvious.
The speakers as a general rule are excellent people who obtain and gain the respect of their party colleagues and the opposition and what is more retain it along with the respect of the press who are so powerful these days. Sadly the present man has a hard act to follow after Betty Boothroyd, by and large he has not really succeeded, but this does not answer
you question I think less obvious ones such as Jack Astley who I think becaame Lord Torrypandy

Although I would not have voted for her I do admire the bloody mindedness of Bassie Braddock who dies many years ago. The great peole in parliament are not always the ones who gain high office, but thgose who do the job and make a nuisence of themselves. I do not have to agree with their polictical views, but their job is to bring the executive to account. Many of the present MP s have forgotten that.

Well, you specified 'man' so Margaret Thatcher cannot be an answer.
I am torn between either Winston Churchill or Enoch Powell. Both men had great foresight and luckily Winnie was in a position to act on his. Pity Enoch was not given the same opportunity. Both men were also historians, which is something that all politicians should be. But of course nowadays, they all seem to go for a degree in something called People, Politics and Economics which teaches them nothing about learning from the mistakes of the past.

Definitely Winston Churchill. Pity that the politicians of today do not have his negotiation skills, fortitude and pride in the country, instead of being puppets to the likes of Bush and the EU.

My personal opinion?

Guy Fawkes. He was the first man to introduce public involvement to political reform.
Unfortunately the politicians at the time weren't ready for his ideas. :(
