I know I wouldn't name my son after my husband, not only because I don't like the name. But also because the baby is an individual and deserves his own name. Maybe Zachary Ruben.

I would use Ruben as the middle name, and give him a first name that's uniquely his. It helps avoid the inevitable confusion and hassles that come with having two in the household sharing the same first name. Answering the phone with "Do you want Big Ruben or Little Ruben?" things like that ... which gets especially annoying once "Little" Ruben is technically bigger than dad at 15 and you have to switch to the even-worse "Young" Ruben and "OLD" Ruben. LOL Dad's love that one, right?

Also -- and this might be too much information, but it's something mothers of juniors have told me over and over -- it can be quite off-putting to try and coo your child's name when it happens to be the same name you might be, ahem, calling out in the throes of passion, if you know what I mean. None of them really thought of that before agreeing to use their husband's name, but once the child was here many were a bit unnerved by that very issue. LOL

And in your case, using a different given name is an even more appealing option, since it avoids your son also sharing the name with your father-in-law (perhaps not the most desired association, I gather, and it also creates even more confusion, since you'll have THREE in the same family).

Good luck, with whatever you decide! ;)

I had a good friend who was the third generation in his family to carry the name William Carl. He didn't mind at all being William Carl III; he said it made him feel slightly regal.
I do like Ruben Alexander or even the option of Zachary Ruben. Perhaps those might be good alternatives that would make everyone happy.
Should you decide to name him Ruben, I think an individualized nickname would be in order, though - to keep all of your Rubens straight. :)

I love having names that have meaning. My daughter is named Mikaylee Shay (Shay after my sister, and "lee" after my grandfather). My next child will have the middle name "Shane" after my brother. Family is very important to me. Allllthough, I personally am not fond of Jr's. I suggest, using Ruben as his middle name. Zachary Ruben is nice :) That way both you and your husband are happy! Good luck!

And I love the name Zachary by the way! :)

I wouldn't, only because it's hard I think for boys to have all the confusion and if it were me, I'd think, "Why can't I have my own name?"
I like Zachary Alexander - very handsome name.
Zachary means "God has Remembered" - very nice!

My son is Joel Zachary

My husband is Robert Paul - and I wasn't going there. People would call him Robby or Bobby I assumed - and I'm not a fan!

Best Wishes to you!!!

Well, is you Father in law a good strong role model for you son? It also depends on the last name. Ruben isn't such a strong name. I think of it being on the janitorial side like my father in law's name, which is Ramon. Zachary is a very cool and strong name and in fact, I chose the name Zach for my 2nd son. Just Zach though, not Zachary.

How about naming him Ruben and call him Ben
That would honor the family name and also have a very nice nick name.
