Alright so this is kind of disgusting but yeah lately there have been these small black worm/snake creatures in my sink and I didnt know where they were comming from but then I realized theres this drain thing right on top (at least thats what I assume it is because when you fill up the sink I imagine thats what that little hole is for?) but yeah anyway I poured water into that hole and tons of those things came out so I dont think that hole is a drainage thing.. unless its clogged. so 2 questions. 1 what is that hole for, and two what are the snake things and how are they forming?

It is an overflow hole so if the sink gets backed up the extra water goes down there and not over the top of the sink. You see them a lot in bathtubs.
As for the worm-type thingys????? Maybe pour bleach down there time and again until they are gone? Some salt added might help too...

Sounds like your sink overflow is plugged. Straighten out a wire coat hanger and work it back and forth in the drain with hot water running down the main drain ( the two drains connect) that should take care of any larva or bugs nesting in the sink overflow pipe. When it seems like the obstruction is gone pour a kettle of boiling water and some bleach through a funnel into the overflow to sanitize it.

Put 1/2 cup baking soda in your overflow drain, then add 1/2 cup vinegar. Repeat if necessary - if you can't freely pour water down it. Ditto for the sink bottom drain hole.
Or use a coat hanger (straiaghtened, them crook the end) and dig out all the hair, sludge, and assorted crud the worms are feeding on. They're just trying to clean it out for you.

ANOTHER ANSWER I FOUND:
The most probable location this snake got into your drains is through the vent pipe on your roof. This is not an uncommon problem. I've seen snakes in toilet, squirrels, rats, birds. The best thing to do since this problem seems to follow you where ever you go is to go up on the roof with a mesh screen much like the screen on your windows and put over the vent pipes. you can use a strong commercial glue, tape, or whatever you can think of to keep the screen on. Make sure it is a screen so that it allows the proper the air in that you need for your pipes to drain properly but fine enough to where no varmints can enter the system. good luck

1) You are right - the hole on top is so the sink doesn't over flow.
2) Some type of fruit fly larvae or similar. This is where they tend to hang out as they lay their eggs on drain linings with moisture but not overly flowing water.

That is an over flow drain for the sink, but it seems it may be plugged up. it should go through to the drain below the sink stopper. It sounds like your over flow is plugged up.

Well, if they're a little bulgy at one end, and they move using whip-like motions, they could be misquito larvae. I cannot decipher your description of this 'hole' so I'm not sure what it is you're talking about there.
