Petrol IS gas. Liquid fuel, not propane or butane. Same thing, different words. And all Americans DON'T run on petrol/gas. Some run on diesel, some have hybrid vehicles, some run on alcohol, (corn based). Some actually run on natural gas. Some diesel people use modified used cooking oil.

I think that you have it wrong. the yanks like to e different so they called petrol gasoline and as is usual with the Yanks shortened this to gas. By the way gas is cheaper than petrol in the States because their government does not seem to be ripping off the motorist as ours does.

Gas is just another name for petrol. It's cheaper over there because it's a different country.

I am going to assume that Petrol in your question is Diesel and Gas is Gasoline. I am not getting into a terminology debate.
The main reason that few cars are Diesel powered is the half hearted attempt at diesel cars in the mid to late 1970's that were a disaster! Fell apart and no power.
Today, the Tree Huggers in California are fighting it for vague at best, environmental reasons. Even though the Diesel cars would burn up to 30% less fuel than similar gasoline cars.
Diesel is available in most service stations along with gasoline. It is a very popular option in almost all pickup trucks made by US manufacturers. There is still the cost issue and maintenance issue of gasoline verses diesel fueled viehicles.
Good Luck

As (nearly) everybody else has said, Americans call petrol "gas". However, the reason they use petrol (gas) instead of diesel or LPG is simply that it is cheap - unlike UK there is virtually no tax on it!

Petrol is gasoline. The reason its more expensive where you are is due to your governments taxes on it. We also have diesel vehicles electric vehicles and one's that run on Natural gas.As for the POWER? we use an octain rating here. The only reason to use anything other than 87 octain is if your vehicle is a HIGH PREFORMANCE vehicle. The computer changing the timing and mixture can give you all the power you need.

Oh, lol, gas is petrol, and gas is not actually gas but then Americans are slightly odd and call things by silly names.

Gas, (short for 'gasoline') and petrol are different names for the same thing.
Diesel, DERV (short for diesel engined road vehicle) and heavy oil are different names for the same thing.
LPG (liquid petroleum gas) is an entirely separate type of road fuel.
It's like 'plane' and 'aircraft' being different names for the same thing.

You will have to explain the difference between petrol and gasoline. If you're referring to diesel as petrol, yes they use it in trucks far more than cars due to driving habits. Diesel engines don't rev up enough for the "power pushers" that are used to driving with gasoline.

Petrol is different from gasoline - besides them paying by the liter, their cars are built alot different from american cars.
Thats why you cant just import a forign car over here and liscence it - it needs to be inspected and properly okayed by the DOT to be safely operated on roads.
