is it more or less expensive to get a modification done? How much would it cost exactly? I'm on a limited income here and I'm not getting any support from the child's father.

Modifications are extremely costly, I am talking tens of thousands for the lawyer and court costs. Most lawyers will want at least $1000 or more up front.
However, to get child support from a deadbeat, rather than getting a modification done, call your local child support system in your state. They can garnish his paycheck so you don't have to worry about when he feels like giving you some money.

If you already have a court order in place it doesn't cost a thing.

All you have to do is get a hold of the case worker and they send you paper work you fill it out and send it back and they send your ex paper work and he fills it out and sends it back. If he chooses not to then he will be ordered to go before the judge and depending on how he responds he may be in jail at the end of the session.

I had my ex's support raised a few months ago, as well as adding insurance reimbursement to the order, and it cost absolutely nothing but the gas to drive to the office. It takes about a month to get an appointment though, unless you get lucky. Good luck hun, I been there!
Call your local child support office!

You may not be able to modify a court order. You just have to speak to an attorney about it. Cost about $50.-75.00 consultation fee, depending on where you live, could be more.

I hear ya on that one! Here's what my Domestic realtions office told me "if he isn't following the agreement then why would you want to come back infront of the court and risk the judge giving him more time"
