first clue would be if it doesn't move....or if you are in gear and the car revs up but doesn't move much....or pull out the dipstick and smell the fluid...if it smells burnt that is a good indication

Crawl under the car and look behind the engine and in front of the driveshaft. If there is a big gap between them, chances are that the transmission is gone.

If your tranmission is really gone, you would know it....it happened to me once. My wife bought me a used car, and after a couple of years the transmission went....you could step on the gas and only get 20 miles an hour out of it.
So I brought it to the junkyard.
The only way to fix it would have been to replace it, and that would have been so expensive I could just go buy another used car.

IF IT'S IN GEAR, THE ENGINE IS RACING, AND YOU'RE GOING NOWHERE ,CHANCES ARE IT'S THE TRANSMISSION.

one way to find out is if you start loosing gears. anotherwards if you select a gear and you get grinding or just nothing.
