empathy is the ability to feel others pain. i watched a show the other night that said not only are autistic people unable to feel someone else's pain but also serial killers. that part of their brain doesn't work correctly. sociopaths are also unable to feel someone elses pain, they don't seem to have a conscious, that is how they can be so opportunistic.

It is a character disorder known as narcissism which is the failure to understand what other people are feeling and react upon them appropriately: it is in a metaphorical sense 1/2 of what a sociopath is. Sociopathy is not only the absence of conscience, it is an aberration in the ability to have and to appreciate real (noncalculated) emotional experience, and therefore to connect with other people within real (noncalculated) relationships. It is a person who is completely free of internal restraints and the unhampered liberty to do as they please.

A person can be so hard-hit by life and its problems that they can lose their sensitivity to others pains. Its actually a self defense mechanism, when you're less sensitive you feel less pain

that person would only be concerned with what he wants, with no concern as to how his actions would impact anyone else. that person would think that if he was happy, that everybody else should be happy. that person would make reckless self centered decisions that were harmful and deadly to others, but would profit himself. oh wait - that's George w. bush.
