All the time. In fact, I know many of many people who don't use them to get out of the gutter, but to get themselves even higher. Imagine going to a therapist not because of a problem, but so you can fly everyday. So you can just live life so much more richly. That tends to be the effect. Moreover than the "help" they're administering, self help books are feel good books. And what can mean more in life than feeling good about it? What point is there more than the happiness and fulfillment you get from it? It's just amazing, and if it's not your preference. By all means, indulge on another book. There's something for everyone in this life.

I'm not sure if anyones conducted any research on the effectiveness of self help books, but from my perspective, most self help books tell you what you already know. So its really up to the person to get their butts off the chair and do what they need to do.

Sure they can work. I read a self-help book on becoming more organized and it worked for me. I had to actually apply what I had learned from the book and it worked.

The people who read those books are already motivated to change many times... and that motivation alone may be enough... I'm sure on occasion there is some knowledge in one of the books, or perhaps just the right tweek to your motivation that helps.... but mostly it's just the wanting to change bad enough to work for it.

They don't work at all if you think reading the book will change you.
Also I think that deep down you have to agree with the author's ideas and only then will you have the desire to work on yourself
