Don't buy a telescope. Not at first.
Pick up and read a good introductory book, like Nightwatch. *Then* you will know what to look for and what you can do with it. The best bang for the buck nowadays is usually a 6 or 8 inch Dobsonian reflector.
You may have to import it. I've heard horror stories about importing things in to India, but that's something you'll have to tackle yourself.

I think you're asking about which telescope to buy?
I would check out Mead's website www.meade.com
The make some of the best pro and amature telescopes.
Typically a 6" or 8" telescope will give you good resolving power for around $500-$1000.

I have friends in India, so I know how difficult and expensive it is to buy a telescope there. I'd recommend contacting your local astronomy society, as the members there will have dealt with these problems before and can really help. The people suggesting buying a scope from US dealers don't realise that most US dealers won't or can't ship outside the USA; the telescope manufacturers force them to sign contracts forbidding them to export scopes. Most telescopes nowadays are made in China, so you may have a better chance importing something directly from China. Good luck!

A telescope will magnify anything it is aimed at, to Jupiter and beyond.
Remember that aperture is everything in a telescope. The larger the objective lens (or main mirror) is, the brighter and sharper the images will be.
I highly recommend this site:
http://www.telescope.com
They offer a wide variety of instruments and a wide range of prices.
Research before you buy!
Make an educated purchase. A good telescope can be someone's lifelong friend, if used and taken care of properly.
Good Luck!

Any telescope can see infinitely far. You can see stars at night just with your eye, and the stars are MUCH farther away than Jupiter. The question is how clearly can you see Jupiter? Almost any telescope will show Jupiter clearly enough to be interesting. I believe telescopes.com ships outside the U.S. The second source is their selection of Dobsonian telescopes, which are low cost and easy to use.
