Depending on what you want to see... you can hit ctrl+alt+del (One time only) and this will pop up a screen then click the >>Task Manager >> look at Processes tab >> this will show you what .exe's are running... but it doesn't always give you a good idea of what program.
If you want to know what is using the internet... you can drop to a command prompt and type C:\> netstat -an
However a better program to use is FPORT it is one you download, stick in the windows path c:\windows
and type at a command prompt.. this will tell you what application is using what port.
To see what applications are set to run at startup
Start >> Run >> type msconfig >> hit enter >> startup tab >> here you can uncheck the box to have it not run but be careful you do not disable needed services like antivirus.
Similarly you can look at what services are running on the services tab.
Good Luck.

On Windows XP, do control-alt-delete. You may get a box with several tab options. The applications tab shows the programs running in a window. The Processes tab shows the name of all programs in memory, including the ones that are not attached to a window, such as system services, anti-virus scanners, and even spyware. Processes also shows the cpu and memory activity of the processes.
A large part of the processes will not be familiar, but you can type the name into you favorite search engine and get details from several sources that can be used to determine if the program is legit or not.

Control + alt + delete. You can end the task, however if you are a more experienced computer user and know whether a process is needed or not, you can right click on the program on programs list (on task manager), then click Go to Process. Afterwards you can click ''End Process'' and this will close the program down instantly. I'd only use this if the program isn't even closing down after you have pressed ''End Task''.

Well if you are using Windows operating system(xp), it is quite easy to know
what programs are runing.press alt+ctrl+del buttons togather or right click
while keeping your cursor on "Taskbar"(a strip where start button lies) and click on
"Task Manager" a window will pop up on screen, there would be five tabs; click on second
tab(Processes).now you can see what programes are runing.
sometimes viruses(that comes in your computer) disable your "Task Manager" so
you can't see what programes are running.in that situation we use third party software
to know what is running and to stop the virus "exe".There are loads of third party softwares that are being used
for this perpouse like "whats running", "XP tuneup Utilities", "Magic Utilities" etc etc
you can download these third party softwares from "www.download.com", "www.softpedia.com".
there is another aspect: though windows "Task Manager" tells us what is running in our computer but it
hides some O.S files(that are being runing).but softwares like "whatsruning" dig it a little bit deeper and
show all the processes that are runing...Wish you Good Luck ;-)

Task manager.
Ctrl-Alt-Delete, click on Task Manager. It will give you a list of all programs that are running.
You can also look at any security programs that you have. You may have to do some searching within the program if you aren't familiar with the one you have.

If you are asking about the programs on your computer you can hold down CTRL+ALT+Delete at the same time. It will give you a list of all programs running. Don't do it twice or you will shut off your computer.

At the bottom of your window you will see the program icons that are currently open, find a blank area and right click the mouse, a new tool bar will open and click on task manager, it shows all currently running systems.
Kinda funny, everyone got a thumbs down but forensics girl.

HIT ALT-CTRL-and DELETE at the same time,
Then select Task Manager.
You can also use Spybot 1.4 if you have turned on advanced mode, it will show you the programs that get started at startup, and the ones currently running. It will also show you the BHO and ActiveX addons you have installed to IE.
