Being a Navy brat, I never stayed in one place for too long. I grew up in Hampton Roads, Virginia (where the Redskins rule) and Hawaii (obviously not a big hockey market). Being a big sports fan, I watched hockey a little, liked the Red Wings, but it just wasn't on my radar.

Two things changed that. I moved to Northern California in the early '90's (my dad got stationed at Mare Island Naval Base). The first big thing was the birth of the San Jose Sharks. I got to go to some games, and was instantly hooked.

The other main reason was, and I not kidding, those early EA NHL Sega Genesis games! My friends and I would play Sega hockey every day after we got home from school. They were so fun. And then we could watch the real games on TV in the evening. I think those early EA games were great ambassadors for the sport, especially for those of us who didn't live in traditional hockey markets.

I still live in Northern California, and it's great to see how the Sharks have nurtured and grown the market. It really is a hockey town now.

I became a hockey fan by being born in Canada. Whether playing street hockey, or taking our skates and going to find any sheet of ice big enough to get a game going. I also played organised hockey from the time I was about 8.

As for he NHL, I became a fan through Hockey Night in Canada. Which is something of a tradition here.

Unlike you Canadian and Northern fans I never followed Hockey till the mid-90's when I was a masonry supervisor on the Ice Place in Tampa. I had the chance to meet not only the Lightning players but also many opposing team players and never met finer young men.
This old man fell in love with the game and will be a fan till the day I die. Play Hocky!

For me, it was when I was four years old. My grandfather was born in Montreal, so of course he is a diehard Canadiens fan. He was watching Hockey Night In Canada when I wandered into the living room. I asked him what he was watching, and it was a Canadiens game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In an instant, he started to explain the players on each team, from Larry Robinson, Bob Gainey, Mats Naslund, and Guy Charbonneau to today's birthday boy and future Penguins savior Mario Lemieux. While my memories are fuzzy about most things, this is one that is very vivid for me. From then on, from the time I was a little kid on up until 2004 we would spend Saturday nights and playoff season watching and talking hockey. While I didn't latch on to the Canadiens as my grandfather had hoped, I did become a Pittsburgh Penguins fan from that point on. I got to see the birth of the Edmonton Oilers dynasty with my grandfather. I got to watch the 1986, 1989, and 1993 Stanley Cup finals with my grandfather (as well as some of the Penguins Stanley Cup games). We went to Mario's comeback game on December 27, 2000 at Mellon Arena (he got me tickets to the game for Christmas). So because of my grandfather, a great love affair for the sport of hockey began.

In Phoenix you dont get taught about hockey. I learned about it from NHL '94 on the SNES, and my teams were the Penguins and the Jets because I liked the mascots. After that I went to a Phoenix Roadrunners (at that time AHL) game. I have been a die hard fan ever since.

Hockey is a sport in which you either love it or you hate it...there is no in between. You either love the hard hitting, post ringing, fan screaming action of the game or you simply find it boring. Luckily for me, I was introduced to it at a very young age and it became a part of my life. My uncle has been a season ticket holder for the sharks since they became a team. And me being young when they were the expansion team and my uncle being my role model, i wisely started becoming interested in the game.

My interest led me to become interested in playing the game so i began to play it in my front yard on the street. This led me to go play ice hockey. And ever since then the game has become something in which is part of me...part of my identity.

I became a hockey fan because of Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy. I remember back in 2000, when I was only 9, I was watching sportscenter and they were talking about this Mario Lemieux guy making a comeback, I had no idea who he was back then, but I was very intrigued. I watched highlights of his first game back and they said he had cancer and numerous back problems, yet he overcame them and here he is. That's how I actually discovered hockey existed in the states. After that I watched a couple of games and really liked it. The whole Lemieux thing showed to me that hockey is a sport, it's out there, it looks really awesome, and there's this great player out there playing his best after coming back from cancer; Mario Lemieux.

The reason I went from being a semi-casual fan to being a die-hard fan was the Avs Cup run in 2001. I remember going to sleep early back then and secretly listening to the series against LA on the radio I hid under my covers. I remember Sakic scoring that penalty shot against the Blues. What I remember most is Roy's performance in game 6 of SCF, I remember them showing the Cup in NJ. It was already there, so close for the Devils, yet Roy made it so far away. I remember Sakic taking the Cup and handing it to Bourque. I remember Patrick Roy winning his record 3rd Conn Smythe trophy.

After that year I got my friends into playing hockey, and I was always the goalie, always trying to be like Roy. So those two players, Roy and Lemieux, is what turned me into the hockey fan I am today.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1973, I was in English class (English being my primary language I never understood why I needed it) and our teacher handed us a quiz for the fun of it. We were one of his best classes and it was our award for doing so well. It was a sports based test about the NFL and I overheard a few of the guys in the row next to me talking about what turned out to be the Flyers. This was between games 4 and 5 of the 73-74 Stanley Cup Finals.

I jumped into the conversation and decided to listen to the game on the radio instead of my Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd albums of the day. The Bruins took game 5 but I liked what I was hearing. I had already watched games on NBC with my neighbor Chuck who was a Bruins and Habs fan and despised the Flyers, so I could visualize what was going on.

We all know how it turned out but I was still very much into playing QB in football and was still learning the art of throwing a curve in baseball and actually wasn't aware that the Flyers won the cup until my Mother purchased a commemorative guide that she bought at a local ACME supermarket. It was white and had a Stanley Cup in the center and it was flanked by an image of Parent on one side and Clarke on the other.

That got me sold on the Flyers and in following them to their 2nd championship, I began to let go of my endeavors of becoming a star QB and pitcher and concentrated on chasing girls and being a goaltender. If I never got into drugs, God knows what could have been.
