Psychologists are human - some care more than others. It depends on what condition(s) they're treating, but it's probably rare to help someone who doesn't want help. Heck, sometimes it's hard to be helped even when a person really wants the help. But, I have definitely seen adults come for treatment b/c they were court-ordered, spouse-ordered, or in danger of losing a job. Some show up very resistant, even defiant and ultimately end up, with the help of factual information and objective feedback, receptive and even willing to work hard to get better.

Well, everyone needs money to live, so very few people think of money as "just extra" (unless they were born with all the money they'll ever need in their lives).

As with any other group of people, psychologists vary. Many, if not most, care very deeply; that's why they went in to the field.

Psychologists can't prescribe pills; psychiatrists do that (they have a medical degree).

Will it help? It depends. If a kid is completely resistent, then maybe not. If the kid actually does want things to be better (though they don't admit it to their parents, or, at first, to the psychologist or psychiatrist), then yes.

A pill has whatever effect it has, whether a person wants it to or not, if they actually take it. Some things are amenable to pills; others not.

Of course some psychologists are better than others. It helps to research and call up different doctors and determine who seems the best fit to help you....just like in everything else their are good ones and bad ones. Some are in it for the money, others really want to help. However, if you go for help you have to be willing to make changes in your life and thinking, otherwise the therapy will be vastly less effective and if the child or parents are concerned with medications being pushed on them, they should send them to a Psychologist not a Psychiatrist (Psychologists cannot prescribe medications). However, even if the kid is resistant to the therapy, there is always a possibility that something will click while in counseling which would make them consider really trying to change and make things better.

Psychologists don't give the pills.. that's a psychiatrist... and I mention that because it's a very important difference. A psychologist generally truly does care... and since they CAN'T write you out a prescription then for them to help you they truly do have to try and work on your issues. They can be very good at helping you realize what you need to change... and helping you to move down that path... but in some cases medicine may be needed... so you would be referred to a psychiatrist... who would glance at the notes, ask a few questions and throw down a prescription... I wouldn't say that psychiatrists don't care so much as I'd say they don't have time to care... if that makes sense.

But talk to your psychOLOGIST and tell him/her what you are telling us... they can get a lot of good stuff from this :)

No, it is entirely up to you.

Psychology and psychiatry are, at best, voodoo science. If I go to 10 different real doctors with a problem, they will run a few tests, ask a few question, and 99% of the time will come to the same conclusion.

Take any common mental disorder, like depression or anxiety, and ask 10 different Psycologists, or 10 different Psychiatrists, or even a mix, and you will come up with 10 different answers each and every time. This is not science.

You can get the exact same results going to a confessional and talking to a priest.

It is only my experience, but a good councilor is like a blank canvas, and you paint your own picture.
You must really want to get better and be helped.
I have been seeing one for 8 months now, trust me when I say it is hard work, i have put an awful lot into it and am now at last beginning to see some results

It is definitely up to you. The psychologist can give very help full guidance. They help me to see I needed to also see longer term results and benefits instead of always living for the moment.

A psychologist can be a great help if you're willing to allow them to help you. OF course they can't do it alone but they can help you figure out why you do the things in your life that cause you hardship and pain. IT is one of the hardest things that you will have to do if you do it.

Seeing a psychologist is a tool not a cure.

you have to really want help and realize that you need change.

Maybe it's the kids parents who need to go to counseling.
