Most men and women join the military at age 18. They spend the next 20+ years living in a very controlled society where everything they do is dictated. I am a military brat. I have spent my entire life on military bases. They are fenced in and separated from the civilian world. Most of my live spent overseas. When I moved Stateside we went civilian....the difference is night and day. Now as an adult I have to worry about having a career that offers medical insurance, I am no longer sheltered by a military base. Rules are different....for instance the driving laws on base differ from those off....You must stop at all crosswalks on base for pedestrians, at 5 PM every day you must stop remove hats and silently salute the flag, on most bases even if you are driving. Everyone on base has more dicipline than the civilian world.
Now as far as troops returning home.....That is because they are seeing things and involved in things that us as a society are not generally equipped to handle especially mentally.
Their income is not keeping up with today's economy and on top of serious injuries, and Post Traumatic Stress, which makes it impossible for them to work, they are now unable to pay all their bills. They are losing their homes to foreclosures and so on. The government is not equipped to handle the hardships that have fallen on our military families today for many different reasons that can become a neverending debate it still doesn't change the fact the problems are there now. The finances are not there and neither is the professional services to help with the transitions. Imagine having bullets flying over your head all the time. Seeing dead bodies covered with blood all around you. Seeing your best buddies being killed. Not knowing if you will survive the next few minutes, day, hour or week. Missing your wife, mother, father, sister, brother, kids, etc. Sleeping on the ground or in horrible conditions, Not sleeping for days because it is too dangerous to close your eyes for even a few minutes.

Then coming back to civilian life and trying to start where you left off. Umm..........that can be kinda hard. You still have the war in your mind and you have nightmares, flashbacks, etc. It is truly hard to take up where you left off and sometimes people and family really don't understand what you been through, unless they were there with you.

So give a the soldiers a break and let's give them much respect. Because they have been through hell and are very lucky to make it back here alive. I have nothing but unconditional love for the military and the job they do, even though they may not agree with the situation they are fighting for. They still go out there and do the job. My hat goes off to the United States Military!!

Because so many get wrapped around the axle mentally that the military is their life... rather than looking at it as a job.

They also get accustomed to the benefits, lack of racism, equal opportunity, and the many sense of security that the military lifestyle, and especially living in military housing quarters, or barracks offer.

When they reenter civilian life, they are nothing special, just another unnoticed number in society... subject to the lack of dicipline, security, organization, structure, etc..., all they were accustomed to in the military.

Because they have seen too many horrors and can't relate to everyday stuff.
My step-dad was a POW in WW11 and in the Korean War.
hard to believe two times he was captured but he was a medic and up in the front lines.
He was an alcholic and had 6 marriages before he met my mom.She helped himalot for several years but it was a strain on her.I believe it helped to shorten her life dealing with his mental problems.
My dad was also a medic in WW11,he never could take anything very seriously after that, not even being married and having 4 kids.He couldn't stay with anything long enough. He (I am not kidding) was a good looking man even in his 40's, he became a gigilo and lived with many rich women in Bel-Air,Cal.he just walked away fron all of us.

I transitioned from soldier to civi last year....I say it's because you have a specific routine day in and day out in the military 24-7. And after doing this for so many years, changing back to a civi is a very strange experience. Military life is COMPLETELY different from civi life.

Stress! My son in law is a sargeant and has been to Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq three times. He had one of his guys shoot himself because his wife was cheating. It p o'ed my son in law. He thinks the guy is a wuss. He goes a month without a bath, snipers shooting at him all night, crummy grub, sand in everything and then tries to come home to the little woman. He is so rough around the edges he drinks like a fish for 6 months and gets fianlly calmed down and acts human. Then they send him out to kill or be killed again.

lets think join army train to KILL,KILL,KILL

go to Iraq get shot at see best buddy get shot carted off to a hospital where they don't want you there

leave army join civilian life nobody wants to hear your story
nobody wants to give you a job you just have to knuckle down run with the system

however a criminal gets rights and housing and benefits and all his forms filled in and a chance for a new life and they even line them up for a job

do the maths

They are brainwashed. So unless there is a drill sergeant in his civilian life, he is out of sorts.
